With magic becoming more and more emergent in the population, sometimes the "haves" would use their power adversely against the "have-nots." The fact that bullies now had arcane means of tormenting their victims didn't help either. Jack would have been beaten down, or perhaps driven to violence, or suicide. Reporting the acts wouldn't help either...Jack had been teleported into his locker right in front of the principal. No disciplinary action would be forthcoming against the high school quarterback.
Jack's salvation came from two sources...first, a wizard that had been visiting the school to give a talk at the assembly. He had to admire the kid's restraint...and maybe could make a mage out of him.
The second was the advent of fMRI-guided kirlian driving technology, a treatment that allowed what would be an ordinary person access to magic that, it seemed, was innate to all sentient beings. Some people had the genetic predisposition to tap it early. FKD treatment effectively leveled the playing field. Once the reflex was trained, it was a matter of teaching and training the new magic.
The wizard got Jack into one of the experimental treatment centers as a volunteer. The treatment worked, however new awakenees, whether natural-born or induced, sometimes transformed on awakening...this might be another race...even the opposite gender.
Jack...now Jennifer, emerged from the locker room, and the wizard had to wonder how he was going to explain this to his parents. Still, she was radiating a great deal more magical strength than he expected...
